Unity in Gibraltar: 250 Attend Annual Public Iftar Celebration

As the sun dipped behind the Rock on Saturday 21st February, a quiet sense of unity filled the air at the Catholic Community Centre. Close to 250 people from across Gibraltar’s beautifully diverse community gathered side by side for the annual Public Iftar, organised by the Muslim Youth of Gibraltar.

In a world that can often feel divided, moments like these remind us what Gibraltar does best. We come together.

The Public Iftar marks the holy month of Ramadan, a time of reflection, gratitude and compassion for Muslims around the world. Yet the occasion was about more than faith alone. It was about friendship. About neighbours sitting shoulder to shoulder. About different backgrounds, cultures and beliefs united by something simple and powerful, sharing a meal.

As the call to break the fast arrived at sunset, conversations paused, prayers were offered, and then plates were passed around tables filled with warmth and welcome. Laughter followed. Stories were shared. New connections were made. It was a living example of what community truly means.

Gibraltar has always been proud of its multicultural identity, a place where churches, mosques and synagogues stand within walking distance of one another. The event embodied that spirit perfectly. People of different faiths came not just to observe, but to participate. To learn. To support. To show up.

Importantly, the gathering also carried a deeper purpose. Funds raised will go towards supporting families affected by devastating flooding in northern Morocco through the Asilah Salsa Morocco Appeal. Contributions will help provide essential supplies including food and blankets to those facing unimaginable hardship.

It is often said that Ramadan is a month of giving. On Saturday, Gibraltar gave generously, not only in donations, but in presence, kindness and solidarity.

Events like this remind us that our greatest strength as a community lies not in our differences, but in how we embrace them. When we gather with open hearts, we build bridges that last far beyond a single day.

As guests left the hall, there was a shared feeling that something special had taken place. Not just a meal, but a moment. A reminder that unity is not just a word. It is something we practice.

And in Gibraltar, we practice it well.
